NISKAYUNA, NY (Times Union) — Incoming and outgoing telephone calls at Town Hall were being recorded and saved without the knowledge of people taking part in those conversations for upwards of two years, a practice the town only ended in April, according to a representative from the phone company that provides the service to the municipality.
Ryan Hawkins, a spokesman with Gabbit LLC, told the Times Union on Wednesday that the suburban St. Louis-based company inherited the contract with the town of Niskayuna roughly about two years ago as a result of “an acquisition that we purchased” and that’s when the recordings of incoming and outgoing calls began.
He explained that call recording is a universal feature provided by phone service providers but “that this client (town of Niskayuna) specifically said, ‘turn it (call recording) on’” sometime in 2022. He said he did not know the exact date.
