“In practice, you learn a lot about your clients and are regularly in contact with them,” Smith said. “In employment discrimination or labor law cases, you are dealing with clients who have experienced some terrible things at the hands of others. Mediation and settlement negotiations have been something I enjoy because it affords the opportunity to find creative solutions and make the client whole in a shorter period of time and with more freedom than judges are typically allowed.”
