‘Disconnected’ conference looks at student smartphone use

As Featured On:

ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — The New York State United teachers union (NYSUT) hosted their “Disconnected” conference in Albany Friday, with a focus on the negative impact of smartphones and social media.

The conference follows a big push by Governor Kathy Hochul over the summer to call on districts to restrict smartphone use in schools.

Recent polling from NYSUT showed nearly 80% of members said cellphones and social media were having a negative impact on students’ mental and physical health.

80% also said they support new or stricter policy to limit students’ use of personal electronic devices during the school day.
