What is workplace harassment?

Workplace harassment includes any unwelcome conduct based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information. It becomes unlawful when enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment or the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive.

Types of harassment

Sexual harassment: Unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.
Verbal harassment: Insults, slurs, or derogatory comments.
Physical harassment: Physical threats, assaults, or inappropriate touching.
Visual harassment: Offensive images, posters, or emails.

Right to a harassment-free workplace: All employees have the right to work in an environment free from harassment.
Right to report harassment: Employees can report harassment without fear of retaliation.
Right to legal action: Victims of harassment can take legal action against their employer if the employer fails to address the harassment adequately.

Steps to take if you experience harassment

Document the harassment
- Keep detailed records of the harassment, including dates, times, locations, and any witnesses.

Report the harassment
- Report the harassment to your supervisor, HR department, or any designated person in your workplace.

File a complaint
- If the harassment continues, you can file a complaint with the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights (MCCR) or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
