Being convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor has lasting implications, even after you have completed your sentence. Your criminal record follows you when you apply for a job, buying a house or obtaining a license. Even if the crime happened years ago and you’ve been a law-abiding citizen since, you could still face rejection from an employer, a lender or a licensing agency.
New York State allows people convicted of a felony or misdemeanor to seal up to two criminal convictions. To be eligible, you must have been convicted or completed your sentence more than 10 years ago, and you must not have committed a crime or any pending criminal charges since then. A felony can be sealed if the crime is not a violent one, an A-level drug conviction or one that is defined as a sex felony. All misdemeanors are eligible to be sealed, with the exceptions of forcible touching and forms of sexual abuse.
