ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A pre-teen was arrested by Albany police on Tuesday in connection to a shooting on South Pearl Street. A 48-year-old woman sustained non-life threatening injuries after being shot in the arm.
The shooting took place just after 4 p.m. on May 13 on the 300-block of South Pearl Street. The victim received treatment at Albany Medical Center.
A 12-year-old boy was identified as a suspect and taken into custody. He was charged with attempted murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
Pastors on Patrol walk the area where the shooting happened. Bishop Avery Comithier thinks more needs to be done in Albany. “It’s going to get younger. Twelve doesn’t shock me. I’m predicting that it’s gonna be 5th graders, ten-year-olds, and eleven-year-olds who will be carrying guns.”
He was arraigned in family court and sent to a non-secure detention facility. His identity is not being released due to his age. Albany City School District said the accused 12-year-old was not a student in the district.
Albany County Family Court told NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski the pre-teen will be tried as an adult. Peter Pullano with the Tully Rinckey law firm commented on the case playing out in family court:
“There can be lower sentences, the practicality of keeping a record clean if someone’s a younger individual. But, the criminal liability is that of an adult.”
