SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A New York State Supreme court judge will hear arguments Friday morning to decide whether to grant receivership over four problem properties owned by Green National in Syracuse.
Green National is owned by former Syracuse University football star Tim Green and his son Troy.
The company owns the troubled Skyline Apartments where investigators say 93-year-old Connie Tuori was murdered inside her apartment in 2021.
The City of Syracuse is now looking for a judge to approve hiring someone to take over rent collection and other major transactions at the Skyline as well as three other Green National properties.
“They take over in all respects, from the owner. If there’s a tenant in there, they do get authorization to collect rent money from the tenant. The tenant is notified to make the rent payments to the receiver and not the property owner or landlord at that point,” Jason Snyder of Tully Rinckey PLLC explained.
The receiver is a court-appointed person who works in the property management field, coming from a list kept by the state. Snyder said, typically, they’re paid a cut of the rent money collected if they’re brought in, “That’s the case and it’s also important to note the property owner is still responsible for any mortgages that are on the property, the property taxes,”
Snyder said the situation going before the judge Friday in Syracuse is urgent. After lawyers for the city and those representing Green National defend their stances, he expects swift action, “I think in the interest of the kind of emergency need for it, there’s a good chance that at least a receiver will be appointed in the temporary aspect until a final decision can be made on a long-term need for it.”
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh’s office previously said they have a receiver out of Binghamton called Sall Associates Ltd. in mind for the job—a job they acknowledge, with the portfolio of code violations and filthy conditions, will be a large task.
